Earning Reputation Points
Completing objectives earns the player a base amount of reputation points, with the exact amount earned depending on the objective completed. However, this number can be boosted by Mr. Mxyptlk's Challenges, or lowered based on the player's word use.
Mr. Mxyzptlk Challenges
Sometimes, when the player enters a level, they will be offered a challenge by Mr. Mxyzptlk. These challenges come in a variety of forms, such as modifying every object in the level with negative adjectives, or restricting what words the player is allowed to use.
If the player accepts the challenge, then every mission completed under it gets their reputation points boosted, with the exact boost changing with the challenge. If the player refuses the challenge, they receive no penalty, and simply earn the standard RP for missions.
Word Use
The words players use throughout a level can negatively impact their reputation. Generally, a few specific things should be avoided.
Reusing words is discouraged, and if the player ever reuses the same word within a level, all missions completed after the word is used reward 50% less RP. This applies to both Nouns used to spawn objects, and adjectives used to modify things. This does not apply to synonyms that cause the same object to be spawned, and these can be used to re-create the same object if possible.
Using certain powerful words, including invincible and absent is also restricted. Using a restricted word will reduce the RP rewarded. This applies on a per-mission basis, and will not impact missions where the word used was not relevant. For example, making yourself "invincible" will penalize all missions involving combat, but will not impact missions requiring the player to find or spawn objects.
No matter what words the player uses or how much the player is penalized, the player is always reward a minimum of 25 Reputation Points for successfully completing a task. This is always given, even if the player has used words such as "invincible" that claim to nullify all RP earned.
Trivia
- While words cannot be reused in the same level without receiving an RP penalty, modifying the use of proper punctuation, such as hyphens, can sometimes be used to make the word into a unique synonym according to the game's code.
- For example, spawning a "Flame Bladed Sword" and then a "Flame-Bladed Sword" won't trigger an RP penalty. The game considers these completely unique words, even though nothing changes but the use of a hyphen.
- It's worth noting that proper punctuation is a key distinction, and hyphens cannot be substituted for spaces simply anywhere. This trick works because the developers explicitly included both hyphenated and unhyphenated forms of some words as synonyms.
- The maximum amount of RP that can be earned is 999,999 of each type, for a total of 2,999,997 RP.
