A watermelon is a large, melon-like fruit from a plant in the gourd family, with green skin, red flesh, and watery juice. The object's synonyms refer to various similar-looking fruits, mostly squash and gourds.
Synonym origins
- Alcayota, Cayote, Chilacayote, Chiverre, Cidra, Fig Leaved Gourd, Malabar Gourd, Sambo, and Shark Fin Melon are all names for Cucurbita ficifolia, a type of gourd resembling a watermelon.
- Ash Gourd, Donga, Kundol, Wax Gourd, and Winter Melon are all names for Benincasa hispida, another type of gourd that's large and pale green.
- Calabaza is a generic name for winter squash.
- Dosakai is a variety of cucumber.
- Kabocha is a cultivar of winter squash.
- Kundur is the Indian word for bitter squash.
Controversy
Shortly after the original game's release in 2009, minor controversy arose after it was discovered that the word "sambo" was listed as a synonym for and could be used to spawn a watermelon. Sambo is a racial slur used against African-American people[1] and watermelons are common stereotypes for African-Americans as well.[2] According to 5th Cell, this was a complete accident and the racial connotations of the word were unintended, as sambo is an Ecuadorian name for fig leaf gourd. The reuse of the watermelon model was an unintended consequence due to the limitations of the DS, as many similar objects in the game share the same model to save space on the DS cartridge.[3] Sambo was removed as a synonym in future games and is no longer available.
