A Supernova is a catastrophic, incredibly luminous explosion in space. They occur when stars reach the end of their life-span and explode, ejecting most of their mass.
Appearance
Sprite
When placing the object, it uses a sprite that resembles appears as a small, exploding star, with a circular fiery star in the center and the burst from the explosion coming from it.
The sprite was redesigned in Scribblenauts Showdown, having a smoother appearance and brighter colors. This redesign is later seen in the Scribblenauts Mega Pack version of Scribblenauts Unlimited, but strangely the original design is still used in the Mega Pack version of Scribblenauts Unmasked.
Explosion
Once spawned, the supernova immediately explodes in a giant explosion, large enough to easily fill half of a level. In addition to being extremely large, this also uses a unique explosion effect, with multiple sparkles being shot out of the supernova that aren't seen in normal explosions.
Similar to the sprite, this explosion was also redesigned in Scribblenauts Showdown. It is now much smaller and has a cloud-like burst instead of a jagged one. It also has two rings now appear around it, and shoots out significantly more sparkles. Also like the sprite, this version is later seen in the Scribblenauts Mega Pack's version of Scribblenauts Unlimited, but doesn't appear in Mega Pack version of Scribblenauts Unmasked.
Behavior
In Scribblenauts, Super Scribblenauts, and Scribblenauts Remix the supernova functions similarly to a decoration or piece of scenery, and could be placed in the sky similar to other planets.
Starting in Scribblenauts Unlimited supernova explodes as soon as it is spawned, but doesn't create a sound or harm anything. Given the how the explosion covers a very large portion of the level, it's unknown if if the supernova's harmless nature in this game is intentional or a developer oversight. It's possible that the supernova was intended to now function as an level destroying item, similar to or even deadlier than a nuke or tsunami.
Despite receiving a new design and explosion effect in Scribblenauts Showdown and the Scribblenauts Mega Pack, neither game modifies the Supernova's behavior, and it continues to explode harmlessly.

Trivia
- For unknown reasons, Scribblenauts Remix uses a much more detailed version of the Supernova sprite than what is seen later in Scribblenauts Unlimited or Scribblenauts Unmasked.
- The supernova sometimes glitches, causing it to explode when spawned without actually playing the explosion graphics, appearing to simply disappear. It's not currently understood why this occurs, or how to get it to occur consistently.
- The redesigned supernova's sprite is one of very few objects without a black outline.
- This theoretically gives it the unique trait of being completely invisible when given the invisible adjective, but in practice this use is limited, due to the supernova exploding anyway when it's placed.
- Despite "exploding", Showdown's supernova design does not get destroyed immediately, and remains in the level with an invisible sprite until the explosion effect fully disappears.
