A Potion is a magical liquid, often in the form of either medicine or poison. Potions are invaluable tools in certain games for solving puzzles, due to their unique ability to apply adjectives to pre-existing objects.
Behavior
In Scribblenauts
In Scribblenauts, the Potion is a magical item, and can be picked up and used on poisoned creatures to cure them. A potion and poison can also be used together to tame hostile creature, first by poisoning the creature with the poison, then by curing it with the potion.
In Super Scribblenauts and Scribblenauts Remix
In Super Scribblenauts and Scribblenauts Remix, potions are extremely useful items for gameplay, as they have unique interactions with the game's adjectives.
Unlike all other objects in the game, adjectives don't actually modify to the potion itself. (unless they apply a texture change, such as red or stone) Instead, a potion with adjectives can be used on objects to apply the adjective to them.
For example, if a level starts the player with a Dog they need to move up a large cliff. The player could create a "Flying Potion" and use it on the dog to give it the ability to fly.
There are other ways to achieve this effect, such as when you give an NPC a Potion of any kind or when a creature eats a potion, (such as a Mouse eating a Cheesy Potion).
In addition to the adjectives, unmodified Potions can no longer can be used to cure poisoned creatures. Dr. Jekyll also eats potions to transform between Mr. Hyde and himself.
In Scribblenauts Unlimited and future titles
Potions didn't receive any behavioral changes in Scribblenauts Unlimited, and can still be used to apply their given adjectives to other objects, as well as a magic liquid for puzzle solutions. However, Unlimited introduced the ability for players to freely modify the adjectives of existing objects on their own. This mechanic has been present in every game since, and as a result, using potions to modify adjectives has become mostly obsolete.
Potions can still be used to apply adjectives in some scenarios where the menu cannot. However, these uses are generally a lot more niche or are very specific. "Absent potions" can be used on most objects to destroy them, similar to a Death Ray. A "winged dotted potion" is required to spawn a Winged Dotted Bathtub in Scribblenauts Showdown, due to a quirk with the game's word entry system. Finally, players playing the Co-op mode in Scribblenauts Showdown's Sandbox and the Scribblenauts Mega Pack can use potions to apply adjectives onto each other, which is something that otherwise isn't possible.
Trivia
- A variant of the potion called the Health Potion exists, which heals those it's used on.
- Despite it's similar name and appearance, the health potion is considered a distinct object from the ordinary potion. It is not just a potion with a "health" adjective applied to it.
- adding too many adjectives (10 in Remix), will cause other adjectives to become null and not work.
- In Remix Level 9-2, the potion will get the adjective weightless, but it's not affected be the adjective.
