A Video Game is a handheld console. Starting in Scribblenauts Showdown, the item was renamed to Handheld.
Properties
Pre-Unlimited
As a projectile, this item can be thrown a considerably long way, possibly relating to its diminutive size. When interacted with, an 8-bit version of the Scribblenauts theme tune plays, again referencing the old-fashioned late 80's gaming situation.
Unlimited
In Scribblenauts Unlimited this object can't be thrown, however when it's interacted with this object will turn the screen green and pixelated, as a reference to the all-green screen seen on the original Nintendo Game Boy. In the 3DS version, there isn't a screen effect, but the video game music still plays.
Unmasked
In Scribblenauts Unmasked the item got a new smartphone like design, and trying to punch with it equipped will display some particles.
Showdown
The item has now been renamed to "Handheld", and can also be created using the synonyms "Handheld System" or "Handheld Game System". None of it's previous names work, as "game" has been changed to be a synonym for board game, "video game" is now a synonym for a console, and a "handheld video game" is just a console with the handheld adjective.
In addition to the name changes, the item returned to it's original Game Boy inspired design, and no longer uses the smartphone design seen in Unmasked.
Mega Pack
The item continues to use the Handheld name introduced in Showdown, but otherwise remains identical to how it originally appeared in both Unlimited and Unmasked. The design it uses matches the game played, with the Game Boy design being used when playing Unlimited, and the smartphone design being used when playing Unmasked.
Trivia
- The sprite used before Unmasked is similar to a Nintendo Game Boy.
- In the Scribblenauts Mega Pack, the Video Game lost every single one of it's original synonyms, including "Video Game" itself. The item was instead given the names of the similar "handheld" object.
- As a result of the Video Game taking it's names, the original "Handheld" item is completely unspawnable in the Mega Pack.
- In the 3DS version of Scribblenauts Unlimited, there isn't a pixel effect when interacting with the video game, and instead it only plays the 8-bit music.
- In the 3DS version of Scribblenauts Unlimited, living objects who interact with the video game will also cause the video game music to start, not just the player.
- In the 3DS version of Scribblenauts Unlimited, the video game's directional-pad and buttons are extremely small and almost unnoticeable, the same issue applies with Nyan Cat's sprinkles.
